Double Cut
This drill is for the shortstop and second baseman. If a ball hit to the outfield passes the outfielder and goes to the wall, both players should go out for the cutoff. For example, if the ball is hit into the left-center field gap and rolls to the wall, the hitter will essentially have a stand up double, but could have a triple with some speed. In this scenario, the shortstop will go out further than normal with the second baseman some 25-30ft behind. If the throw from the outfield is accurate, the shortstop will cut it off and make the appropriate play. If the ball is over or under thrown, the lead man will let the ball go through to the second baseman who will then make the easier play.
The shortstop is the lead cutoff man for balls hit down the left field line and in left center, while the second baseman is the lead cut off man for right center and the right field line. Always ensure that both cut off men are lined up where the play is going to go.
