Backup Drill
In baseball, every defensive player should be moving on every play; everyone has a place to be. In this drill, all fielders in their positions and a runner at home, the coach hits a ball to a fielder who catches the ball and throws it to the appropriate base. At this time, the ball is not caught by the intended fielder, but allowed to go through to the backup person. The following is an example:
With no one on, a ground ball is hit to third. The third baseman fields gets it and throws to first. The second baseman, right fielder and catcher should all have been moving to back up first. The first baseman allows the ball to go through and one of those three players retrieves the ball and throws to second. The left fielder and center fielder should now be backing up. The throw now goes to third with the pitcher, left fielder and catcher backing up the play. The throw now goes home and is finally caught."
Vary up the situations and ensure that all fielders are backing up the proper bases.
